We’re not greedy for seats like Umno, says Bersatu

AYER KEROH: A top Perikatan Nasional (PN) leader has brushed aside claims that the party was greedy in wanting to contest all seats in the Melaka state election.

In an online ceramah, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said that it was Umno that was greedy. He claimed that during early discussions on working together for the state election, Umno wanted to be given 18 seats in return for cooperation.

“From the start, they (Umno) said it had to be 18 seats for them first and after that, we would discuss who would get the remaining seats . Now, who is greedy?” the home minister asked.

Hamzah also said PN did not like the notion that it was crazy for seats, saying the coalition was always the one that compromised, especially its chairman Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said Muhyiddin was always willing to give way, as long as all parties were united and were open to holding discussions with each other.

“How is it that a prime minister would propose a representative from Umno (as his replacement) when the party had cost him his position? This just shows that Muhyiddin took note of issues that were important to the people, especially the pandemic,” he said.

Hamzah also dismissed criticism that Bersatu was bullying Umno, asking how it could be the bully when Umno called it a small party and wanted the lion’s share of the seats.

“Who is bullying who? This does not make sense at all. Gerakan used to be part of Barisan Nasional and for the longest time they were bullied. That is why they joined PN,” he said.

Hamzah added that what was important to PN now was to continue fighting for the welfare of the people.
