We were trapped at home, not picnicking, says flood victim

PETALING JAYA: A flood victim has denied that she and her family were having a picnic when they were trapped by rising flood waters in Kedah yesterday.

Recounting her harrowing experience, Namisah Haya said she and her husband, Ishak Saad were trapped in their home in Kampung Iboi, Kedah.

She said they called the fire and rescue department yesterday to rescue them. However, they were told the area was inaccessible due to a collapsed bridge.

“We hadn’t eaten, there was no electricity or water. The fire and rescue department was unable to help,” she told FMT.

“Who could we have sought help from when the area was inaccessible?”

The 56-year-old said that as no one came to their aid, their children were forced to cross the nearby river to check on them today.

She dismissed a media report claiming that she and her family were picnicking, adding that her family and friends had crossed the river to deliver food.

Namisah said after she had crossed the river herself and waited until about 5pm, the fire and rescue department finally came to their rescue.

Earlier today, Harian Metro reported that 15 individuals were having a picnic at Sungai Kupang before being trapped overnight due to the floods in Baling. — Free Malaysia Today
