Was statement on ‘dirty cops’ cartel taken from ex-IGP, MP asks EAIC

PETALING JAYA: A DAP leader has called on the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) to disclose if it took a statement from former inspector-general of police (IGP) Abdul Hamid Bador in its investigations into his claim that a “cartel” existed among police ranks.

This comes after EAIC said it was unable to determine allegations of a “dirty cops” cartel as claimed by Hamid in March last year.

“Based on witness testimony and documents obtained by EAIC, we cannot confirm the existence of a cartel within the police force as alleged by Hamid,” EAIC chairman Sidek Hassan said yesterday.

Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said EAIC’s finding was at odds with Hamid’s revelation, and wondered if the investigations were incomplete.

“EAIC should also reveal who were investigated and if these witnesses had an interest in the outcome of the investigations.

“The question of whether statements were taken from independent parties is important, as if this was not done, it cannot be said that the findings of EAIC are impartial,” he said in a statement today.

Ramkarpal, who is also DAP’s national legal bureau chairman, urged EAIC to provide reasons if Hamid’s statement was not taken during the course of its investigations.

“It is necessary for EAIC to do so to inspire public confidence in its findings, particularly in light of the serious implications behind Hamid’s said revelations.

“The effectiveness of the investigation of the EAIC is very much in the spotlight now as Hamid’s revelations carry considerable weight as he was the serving IGP at the time he made them.

“That being the case, he would surely have been privy to information leading to his belief that such a cartel exists.” — Free Malaysia Today
