Use own money to help people too, Anwar tells opposition reps

PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has urged elected representatives from the bloc to use their own money to help constituents struggling due to the pandemic instead of waiting for funds from the government.

Anwar, who is PKR president, said the duty of politicians was not just to file motions, formulate policies or rebuke the government over mistakes, but to also serve the people well.

“I have stressed this matter numerous times to all MPs and assemblymen across the country. Aside from the allocations given by the government, each one must fork out their own personal funds to help people who are in difficulty.

“Instead of just using government funds or asking for donations, they should set a good example by helping the rakyat with the money from their own pockets,” he said when launching PKR’s Jelajah Peduli Nadi Rakyat at the party headquarters today.

Nonetheless, Anwar again urged Putrajaya for RM45 billion of direct fiscal injection in aid to the B40 and M40 groups, adding that he had stressed the matter when signing the recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Through the party’s Jelajah Peduli Nadi Rakyat programme, some 10,000 basic food packs will be distributed across the country, starting today.

Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, who was also at the event, said the initiative signified his party’s willingness to mobilise aid for the people without depending on government funding. — Free Malaysia Today
