Set up select panel on anti-hopping laws now, says Nazri

KUALA LUMPUR: Nazri Aziz (BN-Padang Rengas) has urged Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Harun to immediately set up a select committee to speed up the process of tabling anti-hopping laws before the next general election (GE15).

The former federal minister told the Dewan Rakyat today the rakyat’s mandate had been betrayed twice.

The first was after GE14, he said, referring to the Sheraton Move, which saw the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan administration, and the second was the collapse of Muhyiddin Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional administration.

“(The rakyat) has been betrayed twice,” Nazri said during the debate on the Supply Bill 2022 at the committee stage.

“The first was to reject the decision made in GE14 which elected the PH government. Then, another government (PN) was formed but it, too, collapsed.”

On the Melaka state election, Nazri said no one was keen but the polls still took place because four assemblymen retracted their support for the state government.

“No one wanted this (the Melaka polls) because of the Covid crisis and the struggling economy.”

He said such moves were a betrayal of the rakyat, who were “fed up with politicians, be it MPs, assemblymen or senators”.

He said those who jumped parties should be punished by the rakyat, and called for the formation of a select committee chaired by the speaker to speed up the process of tabling the bill on anti-hopping laws.

Nazri said anti-hopping laws were in line with the rakyat’s wishes, so they should be taken seriously. — Free Malaysia Today
