Schools need urgent repairs before reopening, says Teo

PETALING JAYA: Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching wants the education ministry to explain the delay in repairing schools hit by floods, with the new school term scheduled to start in just two to three days.

“Three weeks have passed, where is the allocation for schools that were badly affected by the floods? Are those schools ready for reopening?” the DAP MP asked.

Teo and Sabai assemblyman Kamache Doray Rajoo visited SJK(T) Karak in Pahang to view the damage caused by the floods yesterday.

“SJK(T) Karak is one of eight badly affected schools, with infrastructure, facilities and furniture severely damaged, including fences, lab equipment and such. Yet, the education ministry has not indicated when repairs will be done.” she said in a statement.

She said there was also concern over the spread of diseases, such as leptospirosis, if the students were allowed to return without the repairs carried out and the premises cleaned.

Teo donated RM5,000 to SJK(T) Karak on behalf of Johor DAP to carry out urgent repairs.

She pointed out that the education ministry had stated in Parliament that there was a balance of over RM30 million from the allocation for school maintenance for 2021 that had yet to be distributed. — Free Malaysia Today
