Restore power supply to Klang Valley ASAP, PM tells minister

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has instructed the energy and natural resources minister Takiyuddin Hassan to restore power supply to the Klang Valley as soon as it is safe to do so.

“Flood victims need electricity for lighting, to clean their houses, to pump out floodwater and for their comfort,” he said.

Last Saturday, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) began cutting off electricity supply to more than 350 areas in the Klang Valley due to flooding that occurred over the weekend. By Sunday evening, 333 power substations had reportedly been shut down.

Ismail said since there were areas that were still flooded, TNB had to delay reconnecting electricity supply to certain areas to avoid any untoward incidents.

“Electricity will be restored once the floodwaters recede, the clean-up is done and if there is no major damage to substations,” he said in a Twitter thread today.

Over the weekend, the Klang Valley, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu were battered by heavy rain that began on Friday, resulting in floods that displaced more than 40,000 people.

The floods have claimed 27 lives so far, the highest death toll since the last major floods in 2014.

Twenty of the fatalities were reported in Selangor and seven in Pahang.

In his tweets, Ismail warned residents in Pahang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak to take appropriate measures against the thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast by the meteorological department.
