PETALING JAYA: A record 3,994 new Covid-19 cases were detected in Singapore yesterday.
In a statement, Singapore’s health ministry said 3,480 cases were detected in the community, 501 cases were recorded in migrant worker dormitories and there were 13 imported cases. Among the local cases are 567 who are above 60 years old
The country now has a total of 154,725 cumulative Covid-19 cases, with 26,908 of them active.
The ministry said it observed a rise in activity levels over the past week, including a higher number of visitors across all malls, larger crowds in the Orchard Road area as well as a slight increase in public transport ridership.
Noting that the country had it’s “usual post-weekend surge” in cases yesterday, the ministry said it would closely monitor cases over the next few days to determine if yesterday’s numbers were a temporary spike or marked a further surge in infections.
The ministry added that 1,738 people were currently warded in hospital, with 338 requiring oxygen supplementation and 71 in the intensive care unit (ICU).
It said hospitals were under “significant pressure and strain” due to the continued rise in the number of Covid-19 patients in ICUs.
The ministry also reported that seven Singaporeans, aged 57 to 90, had died from complications linked to Covid-19, bringing the total death toll to 246.
As of Sunday, 84% of Singapore’s population had been fully vaccinated while 85% had received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. — Free Malaysia Today
