Paul Yong’s son to contest father’s Tronoh seat

PETALING JAYA: The son of former Tronoh assemblyman Paul Yong will be contesting his father’s state seat in the upcoming general election.

According to Sin Chew Daily, 25-year-old Bryan Yong will be contesting the seat on a Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) ticket.

Paul, a PBM member, had gone on garden leave from the party following his rape conviction earlier this year.

The Chinese daily reported that Bryan was a businessman who also had a law degree from a university in the UK.

He had received his letter of appointment as a candidate from PBM president Larry Sng.

Bryan said he wanted to continue his father’s work in the constituency, praising Paul as a hard-working assemblyman who had sought to tackle Tronoh folk’s issues.

He said Paul would be his mentor as he ventured into politics, expressing confidence that his father’s guidance would help him win over the voters of Tronoh.

Paul, a former Perak state executive councillor, was sentenced to 13 years’ jail and two strokes of the rotan in July for raping his former maid in 2019.

The Ipoh High Court had granted his request for the sentence to be stayed pending an appeal.

He had quit DAP in March 2020, not too long after the Pakatan Harapan government fell. — Free Malaysia Today
