No more excuses, convene Parliament, Pejuang tells Muhyiddin

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and four other MPs from his Pejuang party have welcomed the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree that Parliament can be convened during the state of emergency.

They also want it to be done as soon as possible.

“Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has no more excuses to stop Parliament from convening according to schedule,” said the MPs in a statement.

They also said the King does not need to wait for the prime minister to advise him on reconvening Parliament as the King had the power to do so during an emergency.

“Additionally, the legitimacy of the prime minister is disputable. As such, he is not qualified to advise the Agong.”

They added it was important for Parliament to convene to debate on important issues, including Covid-19, the vaccination programme and education policies, among others.

There has been an increase in calls for Muhyiddin to call for a sitting after the King announced yesterday that Parliament can be convened during the emergency.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng also urged Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to meet Muhyiddin to set a date for Parliament to convene.

“As the speaker, Azhar should be upholding, defending and preserving the sovereignty, supremacy and singular powers of Parliament by restoring its functions and responsibilities, as set out in the Federal Constitution.”

The Bagan MP said Azhar should not “twiddle his thumbs” and wait for directions from the prime minister. — Free Malaysia Today
