Namewee’s Next Film is ‘Nasi Lemak 1.0’

Fans of Namewee will be glad to hear that he is finally back in filmmaking mode.

The Malaysian musician-cum-filmmaker, who celebrated his 36th birthday earlier this month, announced that he would be working on a new film.

His upcoming film project will be titled Nasi Lemak 1.0; and if that sounds familiar, that’s because it is a prequel to Nasi Lemak 2.0, his 2011 debut comedy.

The Muar-born filmmaker, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, will be serving as director and lead actor.

Nasi Lemak 1.0 will revolve around the travels of a renowned explorer named Admiral Cheng Ho, who famously made seven voyages to the Middle East, Africa and South-East Asia between 1405 and 1433, five of which led him to Melaka, where he founded the port.

The movie will be a costumed flick and is set to be filmed in Klang Valley and Melaka, where the Cheng Ho Cultural Museum is located.

Namewee spent half a year working on the project.

“It tells the story of Cheng Ho who led the Chinese to Nanyang (literally South Seas in Mandarin, and usually used to describe South-East Asia).

“Actually, it is a farce comedy, a tale that is mostly tampering with history. The script has been changed three times, and now the final revision is being made. I’m hoping to present the best to everyone,” Namewee explained to Taiwanese media in a recent interview.

Nasi Lemak 2.0, Namewee’s first full-length feature film, won him the Most Promising Talent Award at the 2012 Osaka Asian Film Festival and bagged the Best Screenplay Award at Malaysia’s inaugural Golden Wau Awards in 2013.

Namewee had been releasing one movie every year starting Nasi Lemak 2.0 in 2011. He followed that with Hantu Gangster in 2012 and Kara King in 2013.

His filmmaking career hit a roadblock when Banglasia got banned in 2014. The ban was lifted this year and Banglasia 2.0 finally hit local cinemas in February.
