PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak will remain the Pekan MP until the review of his conviction and sentencing in the SRC International case – which was recently affirmed by the Federal Court – is disposed of, the Dewan Rakyat Speaker said.
This comes days after Azhar Harun revealed that the former prime minister had filed a petition seeking a royal pardon for his conviction.
At the time, Azhar said that Najib’s status as an MP remains unless his application for a royal pardon is rejected.
Najib filed the petition on Sept 2, which is within 14 days of the Federal Court reaffirming his conviction in the case.
“Taking into account the petition for pardon and a motion has been made, YB DSN’s (Najib) status as Pekan MP remains unchanged and will only be finalised after both the petition for pardon and that motion are resolved,” he said in a statement today.
Under Article 48 of the Federal Constitution, a person can be disqualified as an MP if they are convicted for an offence and sentenced to more than one year in jail and fined more than RM2,000.
Najib was imprisoned 13 days ago after the Federal Court upheld his conviction and sentence of 12 years’ jail and a RM210 milllion fine in the SRC International case.
He has been the Pekan MP for five terms since 1976. — Free Malaysia Today
