MTUC urges more tripartite meetings to help govt with labour policies

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has called for more frequent National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC) meetings following the formation of the new government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

MTUC secretary-general Kamarul Baharin Mansor said he hoped the new government will adopt an employee-friendly approach with its policies, by taking into account views from the ground.

“The NLAC will need to meet as often as possible to assist the government in formulating its policies,” he said in a statement.

The tripartite NLAC comprises representatives from employees, employers and the federal government.

MTUC also called on the government to solve outstanding issues affecting workers as soon as possible, including the lack of enforcement of the new minimum wage, the rising cost of living, forced labour, and restrictions on forming unions.

Yesterday, Anwar was appointed the 10th prime minister following a meeting between the King and the Malay rulers.

At a press conference, the Pakatan Harapan chairman said his administration will now focus on the economy and do “whatever it takes” to revive it. — Free Malaysia Today
