KUALA LUMPUR: The Islamic development department (Jakim) has always been under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department, the government said today, in clearing confusion that it has come under the Conference of Rulers.
Religious affairs minister Idris Ahmad said media reports stating otherwise were inaccurate.
“Since the day it was formed in 1997 until today, Jakim is under the Prime Minister’s Department,” he said during ministers’ question time when replying to Abdul Latif Abdul Rahman (PAS-Kuala Krai), who wanted the prime minister to confirm whether Jakim had been placed under the Conference of Rulers, as reported recently.
Idris said the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal had clarified the situation recently, following confusion over the appointment of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, as head of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia (MKI). — Free Malaysia Today
