GEORGE TOWN: An Indonesian child care worker caught beating a 10-month-old baby in a recording that went viral, was sentenced to two years’ jail by the sessions court here today.
Ellis Andreyani, 47, pleaded guilty to child abuse at a house at the Taman Utama flats in Minden Heights, Gelugor, in November last year.
She was charged under Section 31 (1) (a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum RM20,000 fine or a maximum jail term of 10 years or both.
She is currently serving a six-month jail sentence for an immigration offence after she was found to be without a valid travel document.
Deputy public prosecutor Rais Imran Hamid urged sessions court judge Mazdi Abdul Hamid to impose a deterrent sentence.
