PETALING JAYA: Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam has dissolved the Melaka state assembly following an announcement that four state assemblymen retracted support for the former chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali.

This was announced in a press conference by assembly speaker Ab Rauf Yusoh.

Rauf said the date for the state polls will be decided by the Election Commission.

Yesterday, former Melaka chief minister and Sungai Udang assemblyman Idris Haron announced that the state government had fallen.

This comes after three executive councillors resigned and an Umno assemblyman withdrew his support for Sulaiman.

Along with Idris, former DAP man Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu), Bersatu’s Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) and Umno’s Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor) had also retracted their support for the state government.

This comes after week-long speculation over plans to oust Sulaiman as chief minister, supposedly after two months of negotiations between Pakatan Harapan and the four state assemblymen.

Yesterday, the four representatives and 11 Pakatan Harapan (PH) assemblymen sought a meeting with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri. — Free Malaysia Today
