GE15 could be on Cabinet agenda this week, says PM

PETALING JAYA: Discussions on an early general election could be on the Cabinet’s agenda on Wednesday, the prime minister said today.

Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the matter may be discussed by Cabinet members long before the matter is brought to Umno’s “Top 5″, who are expected to meet only on Sept 30.

His remarks about the Cabinet discussions came in response to a call by Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who is chairman of Perikatan Nasional.

“If Muhyiddin says he wants GE15 to be held sooner, we have to discuss this in the Cabinet, as the meeting will be attended by representatives from Bersatu, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, PAS and Umno,” Ismail said.

He said it might be brought up at the Cabinet’s weekly meeting on Wednesday, before he leaves for a visit to the United States, where he will attend the United Nations general assembly in New York.

He confirmed that the Umno “Top 5” would discuss the coming elections. The “Top 5” are Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, deputy president Mohamad Hasan, and vice-presidents Khaled Nordin, Mahdzir Khalid and Ismail.

Ismail has come under pressure from Umno leaders to call for an early general election, with some in Umno speculating that it could be called before the end of the year.

The general election must be held by mid-September next year, 60 days after the current Parliament’s term ends. — Free Malaysia Today
