PETALING JAYA: Graphic artist and activist Fahmi Reza has been called up by police over his satirical picture of an ape which he uploaded on social media last night.
“It hasn’t even been 15 hours and they’ve opened investigation papers against me under the Sedition Act,” he said in a tweet today.
Yesterday, Fahmi uploaded on social media a portrait of an ape in headgear and yellow attire similar to that worn by royalty.
In a follow-up tweet, he said that if people were allowed to accept and not restrict the satirical works of others, they must also accept and not restrict satirical work about themselves.
He said he had been asked to “come to the police station” for questioning.
Last month, Fahmi pleaded not guilty in the sessions court to a charge of insulting PAS by posting a picture on Facebook linking the party with alcohol.
He was charged under the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA), with the prosecution contending that he uploaded the post on June 1, 2021 with the intention to annoy others.
Human rights group Article 19 previously criticised the government for hauling Fahmi to court, labelling it as a “malicious witch hunt” against the graphic artist. — Free Malaysia Today
