Ex-district council president to face graft charge

PETALING JAYA: A former president of a district council in Selangor will be charged in the Shah Alam sessions court tomorrow with corruption.

A source at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said the suspect, 48, who used to be an administrative and diplomatic officer (PTD), allegedly took bribes amounting to RM100,000 from contractors and housing developers in exchange for approving projects.

The source said he will be the third former district council president to be charged with corruption this month alone.

On Sept 23, former district council presidents for Hulu Langat and Kuala Langat, and the Sepang district council deputy president were charged with corruption.

They were accused of receiving bribes and kickbacks from project contractors and housing developers in their respective districts in exchange for approving projects in various districts in Selangor.

They allegedly took bribes in the form of cash, flight tickets, expensive bicycles and iPhones.

A quantity surveyor was also charged with receiving more than RM50,000 in bribes between December 2019 and November 2020 in exchange for leaking information on tenders for cleaning and maintenance works in a Selangor district.

They were all arrested last year, said the source.

The source added that they were believed to have conspired with a firm that was part of a syndicate that wanted to get its hand on projects worth tens of millions of ringgit in at least four districts in Selangor since 2012. — Free Malaysia Today
