PETALING JAYA: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin claims that former party chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the first one to initiate the move for the Malay party to quit Pakatan Harapan (PH) but made a “U-turn” later.
He said Mahathir changed his mind at the last minute after the PH presidential council decided to keep supporting him as the prime minister until he completed his term.
PH had previously made an agreement with Mahathir that he serve as the 7th prime minister for two years and then make way for Anwar Ibrahim to become the 8th prime minister.
“Before that, he was pushed by several quarters in PH to resign and make way for Anwar to be made the eighth prime minister,” he said in a Facebook post.
“After the PH presidential council decided to continue supporting him, he tried to convince the Bersatu Supreme Council that the party remain in PH. But the members almost unanimously decided otherwise.”
Bersatu left PH in February 2020 following the Sheraton Move, engineered by the party, several ex-PKR MPs aligned with Azmin Ali, Barisan Nasional and PAS. This led to the downfall of the PH government after 22 months in power.
Muhyiddin was then appointed the eighth prime minister in March 2020.
Meanwhile, Muhyiddin also said that Bersatu left PH as he felt that the party was losing support from the Malays, citing the party’s losses in the Semenyih and Tanjung Piai by-elections in 2019 despite winning both seats in GE14.
He also cited the alleged failure of DAP to respect the sensitivities of the Malays and diverse communities in the country as another reason for the party’s exit from the coalition.
Muhyiddin’s comments come following Mahathir’s statement at a Gerakan Tanah Air rally in Kedah yesterday, where he said he was willing to forget Muhyiddin’s “betrayal” so that GTA and Perikatan Nasional can work together to face the upcoming general election.
However, Muhyiddin rejected the offer.
He also brushed off the “traitor” label, claiming that he led Bersatu’s exit from PH for the sake of “religion, race and the country”. — Free Malaysia Today
