Alcohol sale barred at Ayer Keroh Country Club

PETALING JAYA: The Melaka state government has ordered the Ayer Keroh Country Club (AKCC) to stop selling alcoholic beverages anywhere on its premises.

In a statement posted on the club’s Facebook page today, the AKCC management said the new ruling was to be enforced with immediate effect.

The same message was relayed in a letter to the operator of the bar in the AKCC, with the instruction “to comply with the order immediately”.

The 57-year-old club is the oldest in Melaka with a 27-hole golf course, and other sports and recreational facilities, including a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, as well as table tennis and billiards rooms.

According to the AKCC website, the club is managed by a company called Ayer Keroh Country Club Berhad, whose board of directors are nominated by the Melaka state government.

Two years ago, in a unanimous decision at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM), 160 members of the Seremban International Golf Club (SIGC) voted against a ruling to ban alcohol from being served at its premises.

The 67-year-old SIGC’s 1,100 members mostly comprise civil servants and pensioners and less than half are non-Muslims, according to media reports at the time.

While the SIGC clubhouse and its sports facilities are privately-owned, the golf course is state-owned, it was reported. — Free Malaysia Today
