2,048 new hospital admissions, ICU occupancy at 44%

PETALING JAYA: There were 2,048 new hospital admissions involving Covid-19 cases yesterday, the health ministry said.

Of this, 1,277 cases were in Category 1 and 2 while 771 were in Category 3, 4 and 5.

Selangor had the highest number of new admissions with 302, followed by Perak (259) and Johor (228).

A total of 1,622 patients were also discharged yesterday.

In a statement, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Covid-19 intensive care units (ICUs) were at 44% of their total capacity of 889 beds.

ICU beds in six regions have exceeded 50% capacity, namely Kelantan (79%), Johor (68%), Putrajaya (67%), Kuala Lumpur (62%), Selangor (57%) and Penang (57%).

A total of 229 patients required respiratory assistance, with ventilators being used at 26% of their maximum capacity.

The use of normal Covid-19 beds has exceeded 50% capacity in Selangor (111%), Putrajaya (111%), Kuala Lumpur (91%), Terengganu (90%), Perlis (89%), Perak (89%), Melaka (77%), Kelantan (73%), Sarawak (72%), Pahang (61%), Johor (61%) and Penang (57%).

In terms of the total capacity of public hospitals for both Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 patients, 70% of non-critical beds and 59% of ICUs were in use.

Four clusters were also reported yesterday.
