1,782 new hospital admissions, ICUs at 43% capacity

PETALING JAYA: There were 1,782 new hospital admissions involving Covid-19 cases yesterday, the health ministry said.

Of this, 1,076 cases were in Category 1 and 2 while 706 were in Category 3, 4 and 5.

Selangor had the highest number of new admissions with 289, followed by Perak (214) and Johor (200).

A total of 1,493 patients were also discharged yesterday.

In a statement, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Covid-19 intensive care units (ICUs) were at 43% of their total capacity of 876 beds.

ICU beds in six regions have exceeded 50% capacity, namely Kuala Lumpur (81%), Putrajaya (67%), Johor (64%), Selangor (60%), Kelantan (58%) and Perlis (55%). ICU beds in Melaka are at 50% capacity.

A total of 222 patients required respiratory assistance, with ventilators being used at 25% of their maximum capacity.

The use of normal Covid-19 beds has exceeded 50% capacity in Putrajaya (104%), Kuala Lumpur (90%), Terengganu (87%), Perak (83%), Selangor (79%), Melaka (77%), Perlis (76%), Sarawak (72%), Kelantan (67%), Johor (57%) and Pahang (52%). It is at 50% capacity in Penang.

In terms of the total capacity for both Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 patients at public hospitals, non-critical beds were at 68% while 58% of ICUs were in use.

There were also four clusters reported yesterday.
